It’s common for old photos to fade with age. They take on an unappealing yellow tinge and lose their vibrancy. Often a favourite photo will be on display in a photo frame and over time will fade in the sunlight.

For this type of damage more than any other we strongly recommend sending the original to us. Our specialist scanning software can detect the smaller changes in tone and extract the maximum amount of detail and contrast. This level of contrast enhancement is likely to reveal further damage as all the small flaws – spots, dirt, stains, etc. – become visible. So there may be more work involved than initially thought.

For faded colour photos the sunlight reacts to the chemicals/dyes in the print and often damages the blue or red “layer” more. This leads to strong colour casts; an overly red looking image for example. If the photo is very faded then the colour information may be too damaged to recover.
